Also known as Te Puia, which means “hot springs” in Maori, digging two hours either side of low-tide, is when the water level is low enough to expose the area of sand with hot water underneath.
The hot water comes from an underground river, which flows from the interior of the earth to surface in the Pacific Ocean at Hot Water Beach.
