Departing Auckland just twice a week on Monday’s and Saturday’s, you can now take the scenic route by train on the Northern Express pass. Travel from Auckland to Wellington on a scenic rail journey through New Zealand’s stunning North Island. Venture through rugged terrain, rolling farmlands and rocky coasts. Travel through beautiful Tongariro National Park with awesome views of volcanic mountains and Mt Doom! There is plenty to do in New Zealand’s cultural capital before jumping on the Kiwi Experience bus.
Today you have a full day to explaore the capital city of New Zealand, Wellington. With so much to see and do here you won't be dissapointed. Take the cable car up to the top of Mount Victoria for panaramic views of Wellington City and the harbour. Maybe even take a tour of Weta Workshop was used in director Peter Jackson's film trilogy The Lord of the Rings, producing sets, costumes, armour, weapons, creatures and miniatures.
In the evening take a stroll down Cuba steet; famous for its great restaurants and nightlife.
With an early start from windy Wellington we head north through Taihape, the gumboot capital of New Zealand and the Central Plateau, home of the Tongariro National Park. Then it’s through to Taupo driving alongside New Zealand's biggest lake. If the weather suits, it’s time to skydive!
This morning we head north to Rotorua, renowned for its Maori heritage and thermal activity. After dropping off passengers in Rotorua who are spending a night or two here, we stop at the National Kiwi Hatchery, where you can get up close and personal with our national icon – the Kiwi bird. Next, we make our way to Matamata (aka Hobbiton). You can jump off here if you’re a Lord of the Rings nut. Then it’s onwards through the rolling countryside to Auckland, otherwise known as the ‘City of Sails’.
