Tour Dates 2021
Departing Christchurch bright and early, we arrive in Kaikoura in time for you to check out what it's most famous for – its whale watching or swimming with the dolphins. Spend the evening chilling on the beach or sampling some of the best seafood New Zealand has to offer for your dinner. In fact, the name Kaikoura means to eat crayfish (“kai” meaning to eat, “koura” meaning crayfish).
We head north and take in the last of the dramatic Kaikoura coastline. It’s a spectacular drive and we stop for a close look at the seals that lay about on the rocks. Arriving into the top of the South Island we’ll journey through the dreamy Marlborough region, home to more vineyards than your eyes can see. Stopping off for a tasting (or two…) along the way. Next is Tasman Bay home to the city of Nelson and our destination Abel Tasman.
Beautiful Abel Tasman National Park is famous for its lush forest framing golden sand beaches and fur seals playing in crystal clear waters. To make the most of your free day, we have a range of activities for you to choose from, so you can experience Abel Tasman the way you want to. Options include Hiking the Coastal track, Kayaking, Sailing or catching a Water Taxi into the heart of the National Park, your Driver Guide will help you plan your perfect day.
We have an early start to journey over to Picton to board the Interislander ferry across to the North Island. Arriving in Wellington mid-afternoon your Driver Guide will take you on a tour of the city, you then have some free time to soak up the vibes in the cool capital before checking out the nightlife.
Today we journey up the North Island to the ultimate adventure lodge - River Valley, situated amongst towering cliffs and bush-clad hills. River Valley Lodge offers grade five rafting on the Rangitikei River, scenic horse riding and an amazing dinner with homegrown produce. Spend the evening enjoying the delicious roast dinner and relaxing by the open fire.
After breakfast at River Valley Lodge, we head north towards the Tongariro National Park for a picnic lunch and a walk through native bush and waterfalls. Included today is a trip on the amazing Skywaka on Mount Ruapehu. This afternoon we travel around the “great lake” towards the Adventure capital of the North: Taupo. The lake itself (actually an extinct volcano crater) is a sight to behold from the shoreline, but the more adventurous might want to take the opportunity to experience optional activities such as sail across the lake on a yacht to the Māori rock carvings, or even get a birds-eye view by skydiving above it.
This morning there is time in Taupo for morning activities such as Bungy, Jet boating and exploring the thermal features of great Lake Taupo. We pay a visit to Huka Falls, a jaw-dropping waterfall on the Waikato River before travelling north on the thermal explorer highway to Rotorua. Your Driver Guide will take you on a tour to see the sights of this unique city, New Zealand’s geothermal capital and the heartland of Maori Culture. It’s a mystical land of bubbling mud pools, rocketing geysers and natural hot springs. This evening, experience the Tamaki Maori Village where you will be immersed in the traditions and cultural values of the Māori people. Participate in a pōwhiri (welcoming ceremony), learn about the history of the marae (village) and the Rotorua-area from a local Māori guide before feasting on some top kai (food) from the hāngi pit. Afterwards, gather around a blazing bonfire where you will enjoy Māori myths and legends before relaxing in a private forest spa pool and retiring for the night in a traditional carved whare moi (sleeping house).
After breakfast at the Tamaki Maori Village to conclude your cultural experience, we head into Rotorua. There is time for optional activities (which are not included) Te Puia, luging at SkyLine, Zorb, or a visit to the Redwoods Forest. Then, we head off across rolling green farmland towards the King Country, home to New Zealand’s largest cave network; Waitomo. You’ll have a chance to check out the amazing caves and their famous glowworm residents, by joining a guided walking tour or by putting on a wetsuit and experiencing the incredible Black Water Rafting.
After breakfast at our exclusive accommodation, we’re off to one of New Zealand’s most famous surf breaks at Raglan on the wild west coast. Along the way, we’ll stop off for a walk to visit the very impressive 55m high Bridal Veil Falls. Raglan is both a surfing mecca and a dramatically scenic area of black sand coastline. Many people believe that Manu Bay on this coast has the longest, most accessible and consistent left-hand break in the world. This afternoon is your chance to try out the world-class surf or explore the awesome coastline.
Perhaps an early morning surf as you’ll have a few hours to enjoy Raglan this morning before our journey to Auckland. New Zealand’s biggest city has lots to offer and we arrive in the early afternoon so you can make the most of your time in the City of Sails. Tonight, join us for a taste of Auckland nightlife and celebrate the end of the tour.
Our Small Group Tours offer a fixed itinerary, with a few bucket list items included. There are plenty of additional activities you can add on to your experience as you travel.
