Good experience - recommend to solo traveller

Great way to meet people if travelling alone, if you want to do stuff in a 2 or with your own group I would suggest hire a car/camper

Would highly recommend!

I was a little apprehensive to book this tour but I am so glad I did! As a solo traveller I was debating between hiring a car and planning my own route around New Zealand or joining the small group tour but thankfully I chose the latter. I’ve met an amazing group of fellow travellers on the tour (most of which were also solo travellers), who I am planning on meeting up with on the rest of my travels in other countries. The activities and sights that you get to see and do would not be possible if you were travelling alone. Having a local guide with in depth knowledge of the area was a massive benefit in allowing us to see places others would miss. I have already recommended the tour to my friends, it was honestly worth every penny!

Good

I was recommended the Kiwi Experience by 3 people so I thought it would be a good way to travel New Zealand. However the booking process was very confusing and I was told false information about the accommodation package. I had to ring Kiwi Experience quite a few times before I booked my bus pass and accommodation package and I also had the ring them a few times after as the website isn’t very clear about how it all works. The Kiwi Experience is a good way of travelling New Zealand as it takes you to all the places in New Zealand however the I feel the money we paid for the bus pass was not worth it. Also the activities that are available in each different location should be told to us before you start the kiwi experience so people can budget for them more and plan how long they want to stay in places. It’s hard to know how long you want to spend somewhere before you get there so it would be helpful to know that before hand. Also the minimum itinerary should included a longer than in Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, we only had 12 hours there on the way down and 12 hours on the way up, both arriving late at night and getting up early the next morning for the bus.

Not as good as I hoped

New Zealand has been good, and Kiwi made it easier to make friends, but I think it would have been just as easy to do it myself in hostels. Often I've found that the drivers are rude, unknowledgeable and sometimes very irresponsible (binge drinking the night before they are driving up to 55 people on a big bus). However, I had one fantastic driver called Taane who was lovely and extremely knowledgeable and told us all about the Maori culture. He was simply amazing. They bombard you with activities and then if you choose not to do them you have to just sit and wait for other people to finish them before the bus continues. The buses have very limited leg room and are quite uncomfortable for the long hours you spend on them. And it's a lot of hours. There are multiple pointless stops and the bus journeys are extremely long. It all feels a bit rushed and fast paced sometimes and you don't actually get to enjoy a place unless you hop off for a few nights.
