BACKPACKING AROUND NEW ZEALAND?
THESE BACKPACKER TRAVEL TIPS ARE SURE TO COME IN HANDY WHEN YOU'RE TRAVELLING BETWEEN DORM ROOMS!
1. Food storage
Invest in a coloured cooler bag from the supermarket, this will become your new best friend! It is so much easier to carry your food around while backpacking, as well as finding it in a packed fridge.
2. Dorm room basics
Once you get to your dorm room in your hostel, don't just dive for the bottom bunk. Check out the other beds and find one that is closest to a PowerPoint.
3. Pack a smart backpack
If you’re traveling from place to place quickly, such as traveling on minimum travel time with Kiwi Experience, take a smart bag. It can become annoying to unpack and pack your bag when you are only staying one night in a hostel, so small clothes bags in different sizes from Ikea are a great option to separate your shorts from your underwear. It's not only easier when packing your bag each time, you can also find your stuff much quicker!
4. Pack a torch
You will thank me if you take a torch on your Kiwi Experience. There is nothing worse when you need to find something at night in your hostel room while others are sleeping, then not being able to see your backpack!
5. Be prepared on the bus
Take running shoes on your New Zealand tour bus. Backpacker life is all about spontaneity, you never know what activity you may end up doing. Especially on Kiwi Experience, there are many beautiful free walks to do on each daily bus tour, read more about them here.
6. Take utensils
Buy a set of your own utensils when traveling around New Zealand as many smaller backpacker hostels have limited cutlery. It can be annoying to wait until someone else has finished, especially when in a rush! They are also useful to make your lunch on the go.
7. Take a camera
A must have for your trip around New Zealand is definitely a good camera. New Zealand is such a beautiful place and it would be a shame if you don't take awesome pictures, first as a memory and also to make your friends and family jealous at home. A GoPro is also useful for the wet activities like White Water Rafting or Kayaking, and when you travel on a Kiwi Experience bus you’re sure to partake in at least one wet activity! Check out some of New Zealand's most breathtaking views here.
8. Keep a travel journal
A travel journal is the best option for writing down your special experiences and also the contact details from all the Backpackers and new friends you'll meet. Every trip will be such an adventure and there are lots of highlights which you don't want to forget!
9. Take games
Bring a deck of cards on your travels. These are perfect for keeping you entertained with your friends, and also an easy way to meet new people at hostels around the country.
10. Cheap drinks
Every backpacker knows goon. It's maybe not the greatest wine, but is the cheapest you can get. You normally pay around 10 to 15 dollars for 3 litre box, which you can share with your new friends and enjoy together all night long.
11. Meet other backpackers
And finally, the most important hint – talk to people in your room, the kitchen, the supermarket or on the street. Chances are that a fellow backpacker is waiting for someone to talk to them. It may look like groups hang out together but it is often they have only met hours earlier. If you travel on the Kiwi Experience bus, you are sure to make a bunch of life-long friends, so have the courage to get out of your comfort zone and meet everybody!
